Why You Keep Repeating the Same Patterns (Even After Years of Inner Work)

If you’ve done years of therapy or personal development but still find yourself repeating the same emotional patterns, it may not be because you need more insight. Often, your body is still holding the same protective patterns. Somatic work helps create lasting change by changing the way your body responds—not just the way your mind understands.
What Keeps Us Stuck Isn’t Always What We Think
This week with clients, we explored the power of the shapes we take. This has been one of the foundational pillars of my work from the very beginning: the shape our body takes around our experiences, in our relationships, and as we move through life.
There’s an equation I’ve shared before:
E (the events and experiences in our life) + R (our reaction or response to them) = O (the outcome)
So often people come to me wanting to change the E or the O. They want different circumstances or different results. But the place we actually have agency is the R. And that response has everything to do with the shape our body takes.
The Only Part We Can Truly Change
You might already know where you get stuck.
Maybe it’s the looping thoughts about your future.
Maybe it’s the shutdown that happens when you think about putting yourself out there. Maybe it’s the passive-aggressive edge that comes out with the people you love
most 😬
And maybe you’ve tried to work on these, but you still keep getting stuck. Why?
Not because you’re broken, but because your body is still taking the same shape.
Why Awareness Isn’t Always Enough
You can have incredible insight.
You can understand your patterns.
You can heal old wounds.
You can spend years in therapy and personal growth.
But if your body continues taking the same shape—contracting in the same places, organizing your muscles, posture, breath, and nervous system in the same way—you’ll continue arriving at the same emotional experience.
Not because you don’t know enough. Because your body doesn’t yet have the capacity to respond differently.
That, to me, is one of the biggest misconceptions in personal growth.
Understanding doesn’t automatically become embodiment.
So what if it could be as simple as taking a different shape?
Now, there’s some nuance here.
It’s not always as simple as standing up straighter where you normally collapse—although sometimes it really is.
More often, it’s about gently opening that familiar shape, allowing the unfinished emotions, movements, and protective impulses that have been held there to finally complete. When they do, your body no longer has to organize itself around protection. It naturally begins to find a shape that feels more authentic, grounded, powerful, and free.
What Happens When You Change the Shape
When your shape changes, your way of being changes.
And when your way of being changes, your choices change.
Your relationships change.
Your leadership changes.
Your creativity changes.
Your confidence changes.
Your capacity changes.
Your life changes.
Freedom Through the Body
We spend so much of our lives trying to think our way into change.
More insight.
More understanding.
More information.
But what if lasting change isn’t just about changing what you know? What if it’s about changing the shape your body no longer has to hold?
Because when your body no longer has to brace...your mind becomes quieter, your relationships become easier, your capacity grows, your life begins to feel different—not because the world changed, but because you did.
That’s the power of the body.
That’s why I believe in freedom through the body ❤️🔥
